Fasting isn't inherently dangerous, *but diving into fasting when your body is in no way geared for it can be.* I recommend doing more research before doing longer fasts. "The Complete Guide to Fasting" (http://amzn.to/2tQjxXa) is a good book to start with. As Tim Ferriss puts it: Please don't do anything stupid and kill yourself. It would make us both quite unhappy. Just in case I should also say that of course you need to balance fasting with eating - You need to survive off of something. I have been doing intermittent fasting the past year (22 hours fasted, 2 hours eating - you can widen it to 16/8, which still provides great benefits) and will fast for a couple days every other month or so. Several other people have recommend a routine like this - Tim Ferriss recommends doing a 3 day fast once per month and a 7 day fast once per year. Also make sure you're getting enough fat, protein, micronutrients and fiber to maintain a healthy weight and healthy body - *excessive* fasting can be very dangerous. There are several ways you can fast. You can perform a full day fast where you only eat dinner, only juices, or only water. You can do this kind of full day fast for up to three days, but after that period of time, it can be really hard on your body. There’s a new type of fasting called intermittent fasting, which is where you are only fasting for a period of the day for about 4-8 hours. You can do this fast anywhere from 30-90 days. Intermittent fasting is really beneficial for allowing your body to rest, helping with leaky gut syndrome. And a lot of that stigma is based around some outdated science done in the 1970’s… That’s why Today on the health nerd we are going to discuss exactly how to do intermittent fasting and it’s many benefits. Lot’s of people today still believe there is something magical that happens when you eat 6 meals a day. That one’s metabolism flame lights up and helps you burn tons of extra calories. This is wrong. Meal timing has virtually nothing to do with metabolism and has been proven to be a moot point as far as being healthy is concerned. And a little bit of irony? There’s actually dozens studies cited below that show that not eating or fasting is not only safe, it’s can quite practical and helpful to one’s overall health. Some of the most important health benefits seem to be: Easier To Lose Weight High growth hormones levels and cell rejuvenation Better brain function Increased immune system function Longer lifespan Lowers the risk of deadly diseases And improves insulin sensitivity Now… this is where I should issue a little warning. Using intermittent fasting and eating like a hot dog contest champion on the daily isn’t going to help you out too much. But adding IF into a good diet will show many health benefits listed above. You’ve been warned… Ok, so how exactly do you, intermittent fast? It’s rather simple. It’s just going to for periods of time not eating any calories. There are two main ways people do this. The first is the Martin Berkhan’s Lean Gains Model. Or the 16/8 Method. This is where you do not eat for 16 hours in the day and spend the other 8 eating calories. Most commonly people will skip breakfast and push their first meal back until noon. Then eating 3 larger and healthy meals at around noon, 4pm, and 8pm. The second method was popularized by Brad Pilion (pronounced Pee-lon) and involves fasting 2 times a week for 24 hours. The most common way to do this is stop eating at 5pm and don’t eat your next meal until 5pm the next day. The 24 hour fasting method has particularly compelling evidence since most of the studies are done are used with this model. How should you start? Go ahead and try a 24 hour fast. Consume no calories for 24 hours and only have water, black coffee, or another other zero calorie drink. When most people try this, they often find it’s not as hard as it seems. Once the initial hunger cravings subside, it’s actually rather easy. I will link some of the best intermittent fasting resources from around the web in the video description as well. He is also a professor of Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University, and one of the foremost researchers of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying multiple neurodegenerative disorders, like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. I’d like to address the Big Pharma issue first, since there have been countless examples of research manipulation at the hands of pharmaceutical companies in recent years. This is why Harvard Professor of Medicine Arnold Symour Relman told the world that the medical profession has been bought by the pharmaceutical industry. It’s why Dr. Richard Horton, Editor in Chief of The Lancet, recently stated that much of the scientific literature published today is false. It’s why Dr. Marcia Angell, former Editor in Chief of The New England Journal of Medicine, said that the “pharmaceutical industry likes to depict itself as a research-based industry, as the source of innovative drugs. Nothing could be further from the truth.” And it’s why John Ioannidis, an epidemiologist at the Stanford University School of Medicine, published an article titled “Why Most Published Research Findings Are False,” which subsequently became the most widely accessed article in the history of the Public Library of Science (PLoS). Dr. Mattson also addresses this issue toward the end of his video: Why is it that the normal diet is three meals a day plus snacks? It isn’t that it’s the healthiest eating pattern, now that’s my opinion but I think there is a lot of evidence to support that. There are a lot of pressures to have that eating pattern, there’s a lot of money involved. The food industry — are they going to make money from skipping breakfast like I did today? No, they’re going to lose money. If people fast, the food industry loses money. What about the pharmaceutical industries? What if people do some intermittent fasting, exercise periodically and are very healthy, is the pharmaceutical industry going to make any money on healthy people? Today I wanted to show you the meal that I break my 16 hour intermittent fast with. I will prepare this meal replacement shake almost every morning modifying the ingredients depending on what fruits and vegetables I have. It will basically be the same macros everyday. I will consume this after I work out and will have fasted for 16 hours. This is my version of a meal replacement shake, as you will see in the video I use as much raw organic fruits and vegetables as possible. This shake is about 1000 calories, 200 grams of carbohydrates, 50 grams of protein and 20 grams of healthy fats. This thing is loaded with nutrients, vitamins, minerals and enzymes that your body will suck up like a sponge after your workouts especially if you worked out in a fasted state. (Which I recommend) This will be my largest meal of the day and as you'll notice I take in about 2/3 of my daily carbohydrates at this meal. I will then taper my carbs and calories for the remainder of the day. I have found that my body responds best to this schedule and I am able to stay lean year round. This thing is loaded, Here are the ingredients: 10 oz of non sweetened almond milk 2 tablespoons of ground flax meal 2 cups of Black Emperors Rice 2 scoops of Warrior Blend Raw plant based protein powder 2 whole organic free range eggs 2-3 kale leaves 2-3 leaves of red or green Swiss Chard 3-4 florets of Broccoli Few sprigs of parsley 1 cup of Spinach ¼ cucumbers 1 apple 1 orange 1 carrot 1 banana Add a nub of ginger for taste ¼ cup of blueberries The great thing about including smoothies into your daily diet is that they are easy to prepare, portable and you pack them with nutrients that are already in a pre digested state from the blending. Your body is able to utilize these nutrients right away and it saves your body a great deal of energy that would normally go towards digesting this amount food. I understand that you may not want or need this many calories post workout but what I want you to take away from this is that these whole food smoothies are ideal for ANY meal of the day. And, most probably will be your most nutrient dense meal of the day. Imagine how you would feel after eating all of that food? I tried it...and felt like Sh@t. I advise all of my clients no matter what their goals are to start replacing at least one of their meals with a whole food smoothie. There are literally thousands of combinations that you can make, keep testing and adjusting the ingredients until you find the perfect combination to fit your daily calorie needs and your taste buds. What are the two most popular, trending topics in fitness right now? Ketosis and intermittent fasting. Today, I'm going to be dropping some science bombs on you guys so that you are more well-educated on the topics and know just how to do this the right way. Let's get to it. 0:35 - What is intermittent fasting: Generally speaking, it's when we're going 16 hours without eating with an 8-hour eating window in the day. It's a way of eating designed to help boost production of human growth hormone, testosterone production, and overall hormone stability. Intermittent fasting is also designed to help boost insulin levels for the body to better absorb more from the foods you are eating. 0:56 - How To Combine Intermittent Fasting & Ketogenic Approach: That means eating a high-fat, low-carb based nutrition plan within eating and fasting windows for intermittent fasting. You see, when you are already fasting, your liver produces what is called "beta-hydroxybutyrate" which is known as a "ketone body." Ketone bodies are essential to the ketosis and ketogenic diet, where they are the reason why you may feel more energized and lively during the fasting window. Remember that our bodies are well-trained, complex machines. The human body runs on 9 calories of fat per gram as well as carbs at 4 calories per gram. If you look at it this way, utilizing fats for energy is like putting some jet fuel into your sports car. This way, you are able to feel a whole lot better during this weight loss process to train that much better and harder. 1:50 - What I Recommend For Ketosis/Intermittent Fasting: If you are in ketosis - eating low-carb, high-fat, break your fast by first eating a small amount of protein first... NO FATS AT ALL. Doing it this way is because your body will be very sensitive to what you will first eat coming out of a fast. Do this by eating basic protein sources like chicken or having a protein shake. This way, your insulin levels rise and stabilize. After 30 minutes to 1 hour, THEN introduce the fats you will be eating. It's important to still stick to your 8-hour eating window, but still, have ample time in between meals like 30 minutes to 1 hour. 2:46 - Example Of A Daily Breakdown For A Ketogenic/Intermittent Fasting Approach: -Last meal at approximately 8 pm -Wake up - drink water, green tea, or black coffee... NO EATING -Go about your day -Closer to breaking the 16-hour fast - go train & work out -Break your fast post-workout with a protein shake -30-60 minutes later - have a full meal with both proteins & fats -DO NOT eat for 2 hours, then have another protein & high-fat meal -DO NOT eat for 2 hours again, then have another protein & high-fat meal -DO NOT GRAZE 4:28 - Other Benefits During Ketosis/Intermittent Fasting: Heightened sex drive as well as increases in strength.
